Writing the Charts

Everyone has their own particular way of writing and distributing charts for a small jazz combo. I always prefer to leave the musicians free to contribute with their own ideasso that all I provide is a melody and chord chart of the tune or song with some basic ideas of the arrangement in a couple of spots, within the chart.

I will write an intro and an ending where the actual melody suggests the rhythm and possible arrangements of the song. Below is the chart of my song titled Bossanova Linda. I use this chart to give to the bass player, drummer, guitarist and for me on the piano. This chart is enough to guide us and the rest comes from our own expression: that is what jazz is an expression of a musician’s ideas and feelings. You will note that the INTRO is the same as the CODA and while you do not see an intro on the chart when you go to the coda you can read that the intro is the same as the coda. This tune will feature on our next CD.

Please note that the chart is copyrighted (Alfredo Zotti 2020) and is protected by APRA and AMCOS.
